Join the #GivingTuesdayNow Movement on May 5, 2020

April 28, 2020 By Rota Knott Leave a Comment

People all around the world are coming together on May 5, 2020 to tap into the power of human connection and strengthen communities at the grassroots level. By joining the #GivingTuesdayNow movement, you can help Tedford Housing continue its response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19 for our local residents who are experiencing homelessness.

While many other organizations closed or reduced their services in response to the COVID-19, Tedford Housing expanded its services. With safe community spaces closed during the day, it is essential for our adult shelter to be open 24 hours to ensure our guests have a welcoming place to be. This change has meant a lot of new logistics and unbudgeted expenses, like staffing our adult shelter 24 hours and providing three meals per day for our guests.

While all of Tedford Housing’s buildings remain closed to the public, our shelter staff is still on-site all day, every day to connect our guests to permanent housing and support services. Even while practicing extreme social distancing, our shelter case managers have been able to house people, and our supportive housing and outreach case managers continue to connect with clients via phone, text and email.

The changes we have made to our operations are in the best interest of our guests and staff. It’s been tough, but we are here for the long haul. Dedicated Tedford Housing donors and volunteers like you have stepped up to provide much-needed financial support, meals for our guests, and other donations.

At a time when we are all experiencing the pandemic, generosity is what brings people of all races, faiths, and political views together across the globe. Please tell your friends and family why you believe in our work and encourage them to support Tedford Housing too.

Join the #GivingTuesdayNow movement on May 5, 2020. Bookmark our donate link today: https://tedfordhousing.org/donate/. Every gift is important to us and helps us continue to operate during this challenging time. Of course, if you don’t want to wait until May 5, feel free to give today. You can also visit our event page on Facebook.

Thank you for your continued support of Tedford Housing and your dedication to ending homelessness in southern Midcoast Maine.

Sincerely,

Rota Knott, Executive Director

Brunswick Student Submits Proposal to the Forest Foundation

Tedford Housing is pleased to announce the receipt of a $1,000 gift from the Forest Foundation, a private regional funder that works to foster the next generation of public service leaders through creative programming that give students the opportunity to engage in philanthropy. Niles Dorn, who is completing his freshman year at Brunswick High School, was given the opportunity to analyze local non-profit organizations and make a case to the Forest Foundation on where to give $1,000. Niles chose the Merrymeeting Homeless Youth Program, (MHYP)a partnership of Tedford Housing and three local school systems (Brunswick, Bath/RSU1 and Topsham/SAD75).

In his proposal submission to the foundation Niles said, “I wanted to donate to a nonprofit that really helped with major problems that can threaten life.” When Niles visited Tedford’s office he shared that he was impressed with the success of MHYP citing the fact that seven out of eight high school seniors who worked with Tedford’s MHYP Outreach Coordinator Donna Verhoeven graduated from high school last year.  Niles also noted that during his interview with Tedford’s Board President Craig McEwen, he learned about the recent reduction in public funding for MHYP. “I realized that $1,000 would make a big difference to this program.”

Androscoggin Bank’s MainStreet Foundation Awards $2,500 for Summer Youth Programming

Tedford Housing also received a $2,500 grant award from Androscoggin Bank’s MainStreet Foundation for summer support for homeless youth. Tedford’s application to the MainStreet Foundation highlighted the additional difficulties faced by homeless students in the summer when they do not have many of the support resources available as they do during the school year. The MainStreet Foundation awards grants to organizations working with at-risk youth.
