Brunswick Town Council Schedules Public Hearing on Possible Extension of Moratorium on Homeless Shelter Development for March 4, 2019

The Brunswick Town Council has scheduled a public hearing regarding whether or not to extend the moratorium on homeless shelter development for Monday, March 4, 2019 at 6:30pm. The public hearing will be held in the council chambers in the town hall located at 85 Union Street in Brunswick. As usual, these meetings are open to the public and available for viewing on Brunswick Cable TV3.

This public hearing is an opportunity for those with an interest in this development to attend and ensure their voice is heard regarding the possibility of an extended moratorium.

The second public workshop on shelters for the Brunswick Town Council is scheduled for Thursday, February, 7 2019 at 6:30pm. The workshop will be held in the council chambers in the town hall located at 85 Union Street in Brunswick. As usual, these meetings are open to the public and available for viewing on Brunswick Cable TV3.

The council will continue to review the reports and recommendations from the Brunswick Planning Board and Shelter Task Force. There are no specific agendas or packets posted on the town’s website. See links below for related information.

Brunswick Town Council to Hold First Workshop on Shelters 1/30/19

While there is no specific agenda or packet posted on the Town of Brunswick website at this time, the first public workshop on shelters for the Brunswick Town Council is scheduled for Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 6:30pm. The workshop will be held in the council chambers in the town hall located at 85 Union Street in Brunswick. These meetings are open to the public and available for viewing on Brunswick Cable TV3.

It is expected that the council will review the reports and recommendations from the Brunswick Planning Board and Shelter Task Force.

Tedford Housing on the Agenda for the January 24th Town Council Meeting

Tedford Housing’s proposal to build a new facility will be on the agenda for the January 24, 2019 Town Council meeting. The meeting will start at 6:30pm and be held in the council chambers in the town hall located at 85 Union Street in Brunswick. These meetings are open to the public and available for viewing on Brunswick Cable TV3.

Tedford Housing is 8th on the agenda. According to the website, “The Town Council will receive a report with recommendations for shelter definitions and zoning from the Planning Board, and will take any appropriate action. (Town Manager Eldridge)”

The more detailed notes on the agenda include:

“Notes: The Town Council will accept a draft of the proposed zoning amendments pertaining to homeless shelters as recommended by the Planning Board on January 8, 2019, and will consider setting a workshop for January 30, 2019. The amendments were based on the recommendations received from the Shelter Task Force in a memo dated October 1, 2018. A copy of a memo from the Planning Board and the Director of Planning & Development with the proposed amendments, the Shelter Task Force recommendations, the Planning Board Public Hearing memo, the summary of Shelter Task Force Recommendation Process, the Shelter Task Force Responsibilities, the Communities Inside and Outside of Maine Shelter Regulations Summary, and a map of the existing shelter facilities and essential services are included in the packet.

Motion: No suggested motion, but a discussion on possibly setting a date for a workshop.”

Brunswick Planning Board Holding Public Hearing for Homeless Shelters on 1/8/19

According to the agenda published on the Town of Brunswick’s website, “The Planning Board will hold a public hearing and provide a recommendation to the Town Council on a Zoning Ordinance Amendment for homeless shelters in accordance with Chapter 12.2-5 of the Brunswick Code of Ordinances.” This will be the third item on the agenda for the Brunswick Planning Board meeting on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 7:00pm in the council chambers at the Brunswick Town Hall at 85 Union Street.

The Planning Board held a series of three workshops to discuss the proposed zoning ordinance text amendments for homeless shelters to date. These meetings were held on November 13, November 27, and December 11, 2018 (see links to packets below). The Planning Board set a date for the January 8th public hearing at the December 11, 2018 meeting.

In addition, the Planning Board will make its recommendations to the Town Council regarding changes to the Shelter Task Force’s “recommendations and additional topics of discussion for the Town Council’s consideration.” These final recommendations from the Planning Board can be found in the link to the packet below.
