BRUNSWICK, Maine (September 1, 2016) – The Brunswick Rotary Club recently showed their commitment to “service above self” with the generous donation of a backyard playset to Tedford Housing’s emergency family shelter in Brunswick. The donation of the large playset was made possible through a grant from The Rotary Foundation and a generous discount made by Lowe’s in Brunswick. Several Rotary Club volunteers erected the playset over the course of a weekend with the help of family shelter resident, Michael, and his children.

“Rotary’s theme this year is ‘Rotary Serving Humanity.’ This project will touch many lives of those kids who really need a safe and enjoyable place to play; a place to expand their imagination, their agility, and just plain have fun,” says Brunswick Rotary Club president David Taft. “It brought a group of Rotarians together to assemble the playground, giving us all the chance to give back to the community and get to know each other better. It was so heartwarming to see residents of the Tedford shelter so eager to help on this project and to see the joy in the kids’ faces not only while they were ‘helping’ but also when the playground was complete and they could swarm all over it! This is exactly what Rotary is all about, helping people.”

“Tedford Housing’s mission is to work together with people in the community to find lasting solutions to the challenges of homelessness,” says Craig Phillips, executive director of Tedford Housing. “The  generosity of the Brunswick Rotary Club, with the help of Lowe’s, will no doubt live on for years to come as the children living in our shelter are given some fun and a much-needed reprieve from their temporary instability.”

Tedford Housing’s emergency shelter consists of 6 private apartments, each with its own bathroom and kitchen. Guests at the shelter work with a case manager to develop an individual plan to obtain permanent housing and other services.

A photo album of the playset construction can be found on Tedford’s Facebook page.
