Carroll Thayer Berry original woodcut print ‘Bay Islands – Maine Coast’, matted & shrink wrapped – $700 value. Opening bid $300.
Carroll Thayer Berry (1886-1978) is a printmaker known for his emblematic wood engravings of Maine. Berry was born and raised in New Gloucester, Maine.
In 1915, he moved to New York, where he earned his living as a commercial artist. In 1917 he volunteered to serve in the army during World War I, where he worked as a camouflager. After World War I, Berry settled in Chicago, where he worked as a designer of installations and interiors for office buildings. There he met his second wife, Jane Scott, a successful illustrator.
During the Depression, Berry and his wife left Chicago and moved back to New England, where they bought a house in Wiscasset, Maine and later Rockport, Maine, where he also maintained his studio. It was there, equipped with a 19th-Century printing press, that Berry perfected his printmaking skills, in the process of which he made use of wood engraving, woodcut and linoleum block. Berry focused on indigenous subjects, including the limestone mills in Rockland, the windjammers of Rockport and Camden harbors, and local fishermen and lobstermen, among others.

Wilfred E Richard Original Photo, Matted and Framed – $95 value. Opening bid $50.
Wilfred E. Richard is a geographer and photographer who frequently travels to the Subarctic and Arctic. He is a research collaborator with the Smithsonian’s Artic Studies Center and a research fellow at the Uummannaq Polar Institute in Greenland. He is well known for his photography and collaboration with William W. Fitzhugh for the book Maine to Greenland: Exploring the Maritime Far Northeast. The book is a testament to one of the world’s great geographic regions: The Maritime Far Northeast. For more than three decades, William W. Fitzhugh and Wilfred E. Richard have explored the Northeast’s Atlantic corridor and its history, habitat and culture. The authors’ personal essays and Richard’s photography transport readers to this vibrant region, joining Smithsonian archaeological expeditions and trekking in vast and amazing terrain.

A native Californian, Valerie Tamplin currently lives in Maine and paints exhibits and does commissioned work. After college she studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and later in New York at the Art Students League. In Maine since 1987 and while a language arts teacher, she has been an artist-in-residence and helped start two cooperative galleries. Commercial projects have included illustration, an award winning film strip, house portraiture and a large scale oil for the Senter’s building in Brunswick.
