Tedford Housing Annual Meeting Update

At its recent annual meeting Tedford Housing recognized outstanding volunteers. The Margit Cook Memorial Award for exemplary volunteer service was given to Manny Sargent who has been a volunteer and supporter for over a decade.

The Scooty Brownell Memorial Award for outstanding service to Tedford Housing in several categories was awarded to Michele Donovan, former Tedford Housing board member and past meal-a-month coordinator.

The Tedford Home Award is presented annually to one or more organizations that have partnered on key initiatives. This year the award was presented to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. St. Paul’s has participated with Tedford in many ways over the years, most recently in the development of the Family Mentoring Program and Master Lease Program.

New officers elected for 2009-2010 are; Joel Merry President; Sandra Holland, Vice President; Barbara Lee Gaul, Secretary; and Irene Martin, Treasurer. Outgoing director, Abby George was recognized for 6 years of service, most recently as board Secretary. One new director was elected to the board of directors. Susan Conboy, a former Tedford Housing guest shared her story with attendees of the annual meeting, and joined the board.

Homeless Memorial Candlelight Vigil- Join us!

On the first day of winter and the longest night of the year, join us to remember those who have died homeless in our community.
December 21, 2009, 5:30 to 6:30 pm, Curtis Memorial Library, Morrell Meeting Room
23 Pleasant Street, Brunswick. Pastor Ron McLaughlin from the United Baptist Church in Topsham, will lead the service. After the service there will be a candlelight procession followed by refreshments.

Homeless Diversion and Prevention Program

Tedford Housing has been awarded a 2-year contract with MaineHousing to provide homeless prevention and re-housing services to households in Sagadahoc and Lincoln Counties and the town of Brunswick. The program focuses on assisting individuals and families at imminent risk of homelessness and those who are homeless and in need of minimal, temporary assistance to obtain housing. Bali Silver Jewelry Sale to benefit Tedford

Tedford Housing wishes to thank Susan Ferrell for sponsoring a sale of Balinese silver jewelry, held at the Frontier Café, Cinema & Gallery in Brunswick on October 23rd and 24th. A portion of the proceeds were provided to benefit Tedford Housing programs. The handcrafted jewelry, silver and gemstone pendants, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and pins, were a big hit with all who attended the sale. Special thanks to Sally Ward and Dot Ollier for coordinating this event!

Tedford Housing is coming to Lewiston-Auburn

Homelessness is a major and growing concern for the Lewiston-Auburn community—Maine’s second largest urban area. Last year, Tedford Housing made an important decision to create new housing units in both cities for homeless people. Within the next 12 to 18 months we will open 16 apartments, each with supportive services for the tenants:

84 Pine Street, Lewiston—Tedford has secured a portion of the funding to proceed with new construction of ten family apartments in downtown. A mix of one, two, and three bedroom units, the financing has been awarded by MaineHousing (Maine State Housing Authority) Lewiston-Auburn CDBG program, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston and Androscoggin Bank.

22 Pine Street, Auburn—Tedford will rehab the old Franklin School in downtown to serve as one bedroom units for six formerly homeless adults who have a disability. Common Ties, a major provider of mental health services is partnering with Tedford Housing in the project and will offer comprehensive case management services to the tenants. YouthBuild, a U.S. Department of Labor program that provides training and construction employment opportunities to troubled young people, is also partnering in this project and will be responsible for some of the labor to include demolition, drywall, and painting. Financing has been secured from HUD, MaineHousing, and the City of Auburn.
